Die Ausweichschule by Kaleb Erdmann is an autofictional novel in which the narrator, the author's alter ego, who himself witnessed the 2002 Erfurt school shooting as a child, finds himself, twenty years later, compelled to write about an event he had long suppressed. Moving between two timelines, the book is less an account of the shooting itself than a meditation on writing, memory, and the legitimacy of transforming catastrophe into art, and concludes, not without irony, with the story of a book its narrator cannot bring himself to write.
